"I'm no model lady. A model's just an imitation of the real thing." — Mae West

This weekend's shoot was a family affair for my mom's company, Care-E-On Bags.  They are launching their new baby bag line.  They needed a model to help showcase the bags and my sister is pregnant with her first so she offered to help.  I think she made a great model, even with zero experience.  We had a great time, laughing along the way.  We shot bags - the outside, inside, all the accessories (change pads etc) and of course the shots with my sister.  Here are a few of my favourites.

Scratch a dog and you'll find a permanent job. ~Franklin P. Jones

I would never consider myself a pet photographer.  But on many occasions I get requests to include dogs (mostly dogs) in family portraits.  Of course...they are part of the family.  Poncho is part of our family too.  Here are some special moments I found with man's best friend.

I like her because she smiles at me and means it. ~Anonymous

"Say Cheese".  As a photographer I strongly dislike - ok - hate that expression.  The result is a (pardon the pun) "cheese-y" smile that's fake and unnatural.  I'll admit when photographing kids I'll ask them to say "cheeseburger" but the goal is that they find it funny and laugh - naturally.  So how do I create natural moments for my clients?  I talk, laugh and interact with them.  I tell them stories, tell them horrible, awful jokes, and let them interact with one another.  With their children - they play.  With their fiance - they play.  With their spouse - they play.

Here are some of my favourites.

While we try to teach our children all about life, Our children teach us what life is all about. ~Angela Schwindt

I love photographing children.  I Love when I meet them for the first time (or maybe not) and I get to see their little personalities come out.  Some are timid and shy, others loud and energetic.  No matter what, I love it.  Children allow you to see into their soul.  They are not guarded or careful - they just are. As a photographer, I want to capture who they really are.  How they act, what they love.  And let's face it, they don't stay that way for long.  They are constantly changing: in appearance and behaviour, in likes and dislikes.  I'm never looking to capture a stagnant moment - children are not stagnant.  I want to see them move, explore and bring their life into my photography.  Enjoy a few shots of these beautiful souls.

“If it makes you laugh, if it makes you cry, if it rips out your heart, that’s a good picture.” – Eddie Adams

I'm drawn to emotion in photography.  Drawn to those moments when no one realizes exactly what you are capturing when the photo was taken.  It even happens to me.  Sometimes I don't even remember a particular shot and "see" it for the first time during my edits. I like the atypical, the non traditional and the natural.  I had some friends over for photos last week and caught a few of those moments.

I love...LOVE...this shot.  The way mom and dad are looking at their son as he stumbles into the frame.  It's an amazing moment.

Family Tradition

The Margolin family live almost an entire country apart.  From Vancouver to Toronto to Cambridge.  The West-Coast family members - including their 3 month old daughter, had planned a trip home for the holidays.  They wanted to capture the visit and come to my studio for an extended family shoot. I could tell the families hadn't seen each other in a while, but it appeared that they picked up right where they left off - joking, laughing and having a great time - even if occasionally it was at my expense.  The shoot went smoothly - actually ridiculously smoothly for a family of 9.  Leave it to their amazing organizational skills and collaboration on everything from props to outfits.  The only real challenge was the size of my studio.  It wasn't the actual studio that was the issue, but the rest of my space.  There isn't a lot of room.  We made it work and here are some of my favourite shots.

A Girl's best friend

Ashley has been through a lot with WoJo during his short life.  Vet visits, surgeries and typical retriever hi-jinx.  When she contacted me about doing photos, we actually had to do post-pone the session since WoJo had recently had a procedure and needed to grow back some missing fur.  Well he's beautiful in these photos - and healthy.  Enjoy!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Ok...so I must apologize again for the lack of posts lately.  This is one of the busiest times of the year for me - aside from the height of wedding season.  I get tons of inquiries about family photos before Christmas.  This year seemed especially busy, whether it was because my business is really growing (lets hope), or because December really snuck up on people.  That was definitely my problem; no snow or any family events.  Before I knew it, it was December and I hadn't started any shopping or really even thought about it. So enough about my lack of seasonal preparations.  Onto the photos - here are some of my favourite last minute photo shoppers.  Enjoy!

Full of Joy - full of beans

I recently took an online course on children's photography.  It was 3 days with one of the most celebrated children's photographers - Tamara Lackey (tamaralackey.com).  The course was presented through Creative Live (http://creativelive.com).  An innovative, amazing company dedicated to "...work with the very best instructors who want to share their knowledge and creative expertise with the world."  So naturally I was excited and since I'd been shooting a ton of family and children's portraits - really interested to learn.

It was, in fact, the 3rd day of the course that I had already booked a photo session with a young family.  I was itching to try out some of the new things I had learned.  Wesley was a typical 1 year old, a little shy of someone new, but energetic and fun.  And really only interested in the toys.  I used a lot of the information that I had learned over the weekend and here are a few of my favourites.
