Replenish 2018

I recently had the honour of speaking to a room full of lively, fun, fierce-hearted women as part of Replenish in St. Jacobs.

In my work I often come across women who ask about photoshop, encourage me to solely photograph their "best side",  or even refuse to be in the photographs with their children because they aren't comfortable how they look.  And while I get (I really, really do), my philosophy has always been that in 10, 20, 50 years - these photographs won't be for you.  They're for the generations to come who want to know what their great-grandmother looked like.  For your children whom, someday, will cherish this photograph as a way to remember you.  No, these photographs really aren't for you.  And the people that they are for - they don't care about your fly-aways, or your double chin, or you uneven smile.  They care about your laughter and the sparkle in your eye.  They care about your heart and your soul. They care about you - and I encourage you to care about the true you also.

So when I'm speaking to women, I'm typically not talking photography, but rather about acceptance of ourselves and who we are as human beings on this planet, who love other little human beings.

I was asked to share a few of my notes from last Saturday's event - and I'm happy to do so.

I first spoke of my own self-doubts as a speaker.  I have no formal training. I'm not an "expert".  I am probably sharing information that isn't revolutionary to most.  But as we looking further into "The Imposter Complex", I was able to re-frame this thinking.

I shared 7 of Tanya Geisler's 12 Lies of the Imposter Complex because they really resonated with me.  You might find different lies that fit well with you.  We simply used the lies as a way to recognize that we are sitting in this "imposter" space.  I suggest we use the accompanying truths to redefine whatever situation we found ourselves in.
Here are my notes:

Your self doubt is proof of your inadequaciesYour self doubt is proof of your humanity
Successful people don't experience thisYou are not alone
You have nothing useful to say (or original or important)Your way is the way  - When you stop here, you miss out on growth and learning and connection - There is a distinct possibility that what you have to say has been said before, but not in the way you will or did share it
You are not readyDo it - you're ready enough
You'll never be able to pull that off againYour success is the result of the skill and will you brought to the table
You can't trust the praise of othersDare to believe someone when they tell you how remarkable you really are
Asking for help is for suckersYour people want you to succeed.

I had the women do a simple exercise. This is something I recently started doing when I'm brainstorming ideas of any kind.
  1. Take a sheet of 8.5x11 paper and fold it into 8 equal sections
  2.  Draw 8 things you are good at.  The drawing part is important because it's likely outside your comfort zone.  Symbols, stick figures are all acceptable.
  3. On the back, draw 8 things you'd like to try, master, or experience.
This exercise was meant to give everyone a true sense of who they are and what they've accomplished.  It may not be easy to find 8 things for each side - but that's where the challenge lies.

I also mentioned a Brene Brown paragraph from Braving the Wilderness to encourage everyone that they are in control of their own stories.
" ...If we can learn how to feel our way through these experiences and own our stories of struggle, we can write our own brave endings."

I closed with a posting by Seth Godin about Imposter Syndrome.  My favourite line is the very final one, which states, "Time spent fretting about our status as impostors is time away from dancing with our fear, from leading, and from doing work that matters. "

I would like to encourage you to step outside the "imposter" space and reach beyond your comfort zone.  I believe that you can find something really rewarding on the other side.

Waterloo Family Photographer - TimeHop

Hey everyone, just wanted to share one of my favourite apps!  I love using timehop (Google Play or itunes) because every day, I can look back at the pictures I've taken or the posts I made on social media.  You link your social accounts and then each day (ie Mar 7) it will show you everything you did on March 7th 1 year ago, 2 years ago, 3 years ago and so on.  It's pretty funny to see what I was up to 9 years ago!!

It brings a little piece of nostalgia into my morning when I'm checking up on everything.

Here's a little sneak into my Mar 7th.

Waterloo Family Photographer. Not so long ago

It wasn't so long ago that: you needed to lower them into the crib, their hair was all fluffy, those little socks were always slipping off,  you taught them to smoosh their first birthday cake, they smiled with just 1 tooth in their mouth, you watched them take their first step, you got to buy them those cute little baby shoes, But there are so many more memories to make, right ... right?

Seriously - where does the time go?  Enjoy these photos from the same family only a few short years apart.

KW Family Photographer. They're getting so big

Has it happened to you too?  Did your babies all of a sudden turn into kids, and your kids turn into independent people in the blink of an eye?  Me too.  How did this happen?  Why do I feel like I missed something?

I was recently reviewing some of the content on my website and a video I created for clients to get to know me better still hits home.  And seriously hits home.  At the time I made this video my youngest was still saying "I wuv you" and well, now... not so much with the cute toddler voice.

Sheesh...I can't even tell you how quick that felt.

What is your favourite thing your kids do right now, that you know won't last forever?

KW Birth Photographer. What an amazing experience

In the spring I met up with a good friend at a baby show I was attending.  I like to make connections with new moms and also others in the industry.  She was expecting her second and was telling me her plans for a home birth.

I lit up!

I have been really wanting to photograph a home birth for some time - just to see what it was like and whether it was a good fit for me, my family and my business. Plus Natasha knew that I hadn't done it before and we were both on the same page about scheduling and the fact that she has babies like I do - in about an hour or 2.

One beautiful June morning, I got a text from her.  I had just enough time to drop the kids off at school, head over to her place and capture this amazing experience.  I bawled when little Natalie was born and stared at this woman who, to me, was so beautiful and courageous in that moment.  I could go on forever about how wonderful this was, but I'd rather share the images with you.  Please enjoy.

Also, for privacy I have not included any images of the actual birth - I've decided to keep those especially for the family to enjoy.

Welcome to the world Natalie!!

Elmira Family Photographer. Family and Fun

I love summer!!! Seriously these warm, glowey summer nights are just what I need.  I photographed this family earlier this summer and it was such a fun session.  We ran around, played soccer and just plain had fun.  And I got up close and personal with their beloved dog.

And their wall design - wow!!  I can't wait to see this in their brand new kitchen (currently under renovations).

Sarah and Steve,  Thank you so much for inviting me to photograph your wonderful family.  These are truly what real families are made of.  Please enjoy a few of my favourites.

Waterloo Family Photographer. Who likes to have some fun?

This family chose a friends farm location in Bamberg for their family photos.  I think it's safe to say that someone likes to have fun, right?

Kitchener-Waterloo Family Photographer. Extend your living space to the great outdoors

Like many of you, I love spending my summers outside. On the deck with a good book, my kids running around in the yard and a cool breeze passing by. We also enjoy exploring and hiking.  This summer we are tackling "Ontario's 17 best hikes".  I'm really looking forward to discovering more of this province.

I also enjoy my vegetable garden. It grows a little bigger each year and I plant anything from onions to cantaloupe. I'm looking forward to the harvest this year.

As I've been sitting on my deck lately, I've been thinking more and more about how I can create a "living space" outdoors.  How can I make it more comfortable and visual.  Did you know that your photography doesn't just need to be enjoyed inside? There are lots of products that can be hung outside on your deck or wall. I've met with a local supplier and we looked at all the options for outdoor products and how to care for them (note: some products need to be brought in over the winter). What a great way to extend your living space outdoors. So while you've got a cold drink in your hand on the deck, you can enjoy a few family memories too!

Here are a few images I captured while enjoying the great outdoors.   If you want to learn more about the products I have available for outside, please contact me today!

KW Newborn Photographer. Musical baby

I'm seriously in love looking at these in-home newborn photos I did of this little man.  He gave me a run for my money at the start, but Dad is going to love these guitar images we managed to capture.  So awesome!

Safety Note: Mom was fully supporting baby while he was on the guitar.  I removed her hands in post-production to create the final image.

Waterloo Baby Photographer. Baby's first year

I have to tell you how much I love my Baby's First Year Program.  I cannot tell you how wonderful it has been to work with a family for an entire year and capture their beautifully changing baby.  This little peanut was such a joy to work with and I'm excited to see her smiling face again as I photograph her newborn sister for the next year!  Please enjoy a few from Miss L's first year.

I started the baby's first year many years ago and it has morphed and changed as I discovered what my clients are really looking for.  Right now, I visit them each month and photograph their baby.  We also do a full family session between the first and second birthday.  Parents have choice and options for how they'd like to enjoy their photographs.  My most popular item is a baby's first year book and I often incorporate milestones and special dates throughout the book.  Stay tuned for a product reveal soon. Family Gallery Wall Design. Waterloo Family Photographer

My absolute favourite part of my "job" is creating and seeing art up on the walls.  It is so very important to our children to see them selves hugging & cuddling together with their family.  This is the reason that I'm so passionate about getting images off the hard-drive and devices and onto the walls!  Here are some of my favourites designs of 2015.
