“If it makes you laugh, if it makes you cry, if it rips out your heart, that’s a good picture.” – Eddie Adams

I'm drawn to emotion in photography.  Drawn to those moments when no one realizes exactly what you are capturing when the photo was taken.  It even happens to me.  Sometimes I don't even remember a particular shot and "see" it for the first time during my edits. I like the atypical, the non traditional and the natural.  I had some friends over for photos last week and caught a few of those moments.

I love...LOVE...this shot.  The way mom and dad are looking at their son as he stumbles into the frame.  It's an amazing moment.

Photo of the Day - February 21-25

When baking, follow directions.  When cooking, go by your own taste.  ~Laiko Bahrs

I found myself stuck in the kitchen most of the week.  So why not photograph it.  I guess on Wednesday I was too busy cooking to get out my camera, and I didn't even realize it until the next day.  Oops.  Please forgive me.

Pots
I recently hung a pot rack over my stove.  It is always changing, and never looks quite the same each day.  I like that.

Coffee

OK so if you read my coffee house blog, you'd know that I don't make coffee or drink it -but I can photograph it.

Sink

I don't know about you, but there is an endless amount of dishes to wash in my house.  I like to polish the sink when I'm done.  If I was trying to seem neat and tidy, I'd would have included the polished version on Thursday, but the texture in this shot was far more interesting.

Muffin Tin

I really like to bake and I really like repetition in photography...voila...muffin tin.

Behind every successful woman is a substantial amount of coffee. ~Stephanie Piro

Okay...so I don't drink coffee...but I love the smell.  That counts right?  For the pure "smelling" pleasure, I am a frequent customer of Elmira's newest coffee house - The Robin's Nest.  Cute, friendly and an amazing atmosphere.  I spent a couple hours yesterday morning with Robin, the owner and her Barista.  Together they created coffee that was wonderful to smell and look at.  I did what I do best and photographed those gorgeous creations and treats along with some of the beautiful local art that is on display.  So what if I was standing on chairs and climbing on the furniture.  All in the name of photography and coffee.

Here are a few of my favourites.

Newlyweds become oldyweds, and oldyweds are the reasons that families work. ~Author Unknown

As the memories start to fade, "oldyweds" (see title) have their wedding photos.  What better way to display them, then a custom designed wedding album.  I'm not trying to sell anything here, but the honest truth is that I didn't order a wedding album of my own and I regret that.  I thought I would do it myself, but time has slipped away and almost 6 years later, I still haven't created one.

I currently use IRISbook for my clients and they are spectacular.  Silks, leathers and just plain beautiful.

The best part is that I love designing albums.  L-O-V-E.  It's therapeutic, like going for a run.  Designing clears my mind and I go zen.  click, click, re-size, drag and voila: amazing images displayed in an amazing way.  Here's a sneak peek at my latest album.

PINK

In honour of Valentine's Day on Monday, I decided to shoot things that were pink...not necessarily romantic (see water bottle), but pink.  And with a three year old girl in the house, there are no shortage of pink things.

February 14, 2011
Beads

My daughters play beads and her newest "princess" dress.  I absolutely love this picture.  It's romantic.

Flowers

As a I said on facebook "Although I think you should celebrate LOVE everyday, I was happy to get flowers from Joe yesterday".

Boots

Maria playing in the driveway.  She was having a blast "skating" around on the ice.

Water bottle

Something pink in my kitchen.  Nothing too exciting.

Boots 2

I know that I already shot Maria and her boots...but how could I pass this up.  She was having soooo much fun splashing around.  I couldn't choose just one.

A baby is something you carry inside you for nine months, in your arms for three years and in your heart till the day you die. -- Mary Mason

When I was pregnant with William (my 2nd), I had a difficult time sleeping.  Joe got me a journal so that I could write things down.  Here are a few excerpts.

October 6, 2009
I have the best husband ever - and the best daughter.  I wanted to start writing in a journal because I felt like I was missing things, or rather that I would forget things about Maria.  ...  I feel like I've already missed writing everything down - like a lifetime of memories and new discoveries has passed and I will forget them.  I hope writing helps me remember.  There is something new every single day.  I LOVE HER.  Good night.

October 17, 2009
It's 3:40 am - can't sleep ...AGAIN.  Only 4 weeks until I'm due but probably 6 weeks until the baby arrives.  I feel like I'm complaining a lot - wish I could stop because I feel so lucky in life.  Joe's up - gonna talk to him.  I love him.  Night.

October 24, 2009
Guess what - I can't sleep - shocking.  Joe took some maternity pictures of Maria and I.  I love them.  Can't stop looking at them.  I keep waking Joe when I cannot sleep and feel really bad about it  Hope this isn't a sign of how this new baby will be at night.  I'm going to try to sleep now.

William arrived 11 days past his due date and was a healthy 9lbs, 2oz.  Here are a few of my favourite pics.

Babies are such a nice way to start people. ~Don Herrold

It always amazes me when I see a new baby.  The way they smell, feel and how they fit so perfectly into their mother's arms.  And it was in his mother's arms where we started our photo shoot of 20 day old Traeden.  I told Ashley and Mike - or better known as Mommy and Daddy - that this was meant to be a relaxing experience for them and baby Traeden.  Whatever they need to do in order to keep him happy is okay with me.  So if we're in the middle of naked baby shots - my favourite shots - and he needs to be rocked, fed or snuggled - go right ahead.  Happy babies make wonderful photos.  Traeden's first photo shoot comfortably took place in his home, with all his amazing baby things around.  When Ashley needed to change Traeden, I snooped around his room and found some wonderful little toys and gifts to shoot.  When Daddy needed to spend a few quiet moments with his new son, I snapped away like the paparazzi and captured some amazing moments between a man and his boy.  Please enjoy some of my favourites from Traeden's first photo session.

Photo of the Day - February 7-11

I've been hibernating this winter.  It has been cold.  And by cold - I mean C-O-L-D.  This week I decided to embrace the snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures and explore what winter has to offer.  Here are the results.

 February 7, 2011
A winter hike

Too bad William was strapped to my back to get in this photo.  It's always fun going for a hike - especially when the snow is knee deep.

Window

This is the stained glass in my front door window.  The blue/purple light made for an interesting picture.  And I felt it fit in this week's "winter" theme.

Icicles at night

After an evening walk with Poncho (our 100lb Chocolate lab), I saw these hanging from my garage.  The patio lights cast an interesting glow...had to add it to this weeks collection.

My Garden

This is the scene of my "edible" garden...not so edible this time of year, unless you eat snow.

A name is a kind of face whereby one is known ... ~ Thomas Fuller

I recently attended a creativeLIVE workshop by the amazing Jasmine Star - and by attended, I mean watched online.  She is the reason that I've chosen to blog so much and put myself out there.  I want people to know me - the real me.  So when she suggested that for the same reason, photographers should use their name in their business, I went - "uh oh!"  Should I change it?  Should I add my name?  I decided not to.  I love Green Apple Photography.  And I love what it says about me.  So here is how I chose it.

Obviously my wedding day meant a lot to me.  It was casual, fun and exciting.  Joe and I tried to keep our wedding very simple.  We didn't have a huge budget and we were just happy to have our friends and family around us on that day.  I had chosen pale pink and apple green for our colour scheme.  We used pink gerber daisies and granny smith apples in our decorations.  It was simple and fresh.  It's how I approach life and every photo shoot.
